"Forgetting those things that are behind and reaching forward to those things that are ahead!"
One of the reasons that I love Jesus so much is that He is the God of "forgetting what's behind you"! I love this great verse which is actually one of the greatest promises in the Bible! Religion preaches a god that "remembers your past", and limits your future because of your past. That is not the God that the Bible reveals! This verse has two admonitions that we would be wise to heed. First, is to forget the past. How many people struggle with past experiences, patterns of behaviour, failures, hurts, etc. that limit their ability to fly full force into the future that their hearts so long for? Second, we are told to "look forward" to some things that "are ahead". What things? Do you think that Jesus died on a cruel cross to provide for you a life of failure, frustration, fear or futility? The Man bled out His life to give you what He calls "abundant life"! The tragedy is that you can't experience this abundant life until you forget the past and turn toward the future with faith. Truth: you can never go forward looking backward! Start by forgetting "two pasts". First, determine that you will forget the "bad past". Whatever is behind me whether it is my own screw ups or the wounds someone else has inflicted on me I choose to push "behind me" and "remember no more". Of course you can't erase your memory bank, but you can choose to tell the "thief" that replays old tapes in your head, "get behind me, my past is under the cross of my Savior and it will haunt me no more"! Second, you need to declare to your "good past", "you were great at the time but you will not limit me by tying me to you. My Father has much bigger and better things planned for me and my family and I will not die on the plains of past accomplishments! I will go for the greater things that are ahead!" I often meditate on the words "the things that are ahead". Who knows what our great God has planned for His kids! Judging from His past record in His Word you can surely see that He plans "big stuff" for those that look to Him! Wonder what is in His plan book for you? For your family? "Is anything too hard for God"? As we stand here at the junction of a new year declare with confidence, "the past is history, the future is a wonderful mystery held in the nail scarred hands of a Savior that loved me enough to suffer horribly for me. Surely He will bring me into everything He died to give me"!
Father of great futures, I can't praise you enough that my past is "buried in the depths of the sea" and will control me no more! Thank you that the future is as bright as the promises of an eternal God! I can't wait to see what you do ahead!
