Talk to yourself!

Posted by Brandon Patton on Thursday, January 3, 2019 @ 9:27 AM

"Why are you discouraged, my soul? Hope in God, you will soon be praising Him when He helps you."

Psalm 42:5

Everybody talks to themselves. Its just that most of us don't want anybody to know it. I talk to myself from daylight to midnight! The Bible teaches us to talk to ourselves. The hebrew word meditate means to "mutter while contemplating". We are told to "meditate day and night in God's goodness to make your way successful". The secret to success is to talk yourself into it according to scripture. I don't wake up and ask myself how I feel. I tell myself how I feel! I don't wake up and wonder what kind of day this will be. I tell myself "this is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it"! As the psalmist did, I refuse to let myself wallow in discouragement. I tell myself "lift up your eyes unto the hills from which cometh your help, If God be for us who can be against us"! I don't sit around in dismay and wonder what will happen to my family. I tell myself "my wife will be a fruitful vine in the heart of my house and my children like olive plants around my table". People are always talking to themselves, they just need to change the way they do it. Why would you discourage yourself? That's malignant stupid! When did you turn against yourself and start talking like that to you? "I can't do it". "I can't see how its going to get any better". "I'm such a loser". "This is who I've always been, its just who I am". "Nobody would want me". If I talked to you like that you would slap me! You have no right to talk to yourself like that since you don't belong to you anymore. You are "bought with a price" by the Creator of this universe, and have been made His son or daughter. Be careful how you talk to the King's child! Mature believers have learned to do as David did during a time of great loss and discouragement when he "encouraged himself in the Lord". Stop beating yourself up and learn to encourage yourself by saying to you what He says about you in His Word! Our great God told Joshua to "meditate in my Word day and night that it might be always on your lips". How long will you continue to listen to what others have to say about you and your future? Listen to what your Father has to say and then tell yourself what He said! Day and night! You talked yourself into that hole, now talk yourself out of it and up on the mountain that He has promised!

Today Father I praise you that you deliver "good news of great joy"! I will pass your good news on to myself by muttering your Word to me day and night so that I can live encouraged as you have designed!
